Aston Villa has finalized a transfer agreement with Chelsea for Dutch defender Ian Maatsen. The 22-year-old’s transfer fee is set between £35 million and £40 million, inclusive of potential add-ons. This move is pending a medical examination, with Maatsen slated to ink a six-year contract at Villa Park. The left-back chose Villa, lured by the prospect of playing Champions League football next season, following his stint at Borussia Dortmund where he competed in the competition’s final.
Maatsen’s Departure from Chelsea Finalized
Chelsea decided against a swap deal involving Villa’s Jhon Duran, choosing to proceed with the sale of Ian Maatsen independently. Despite interest from Dortmund, who hesitated at the £35m valuation following a fruitful loan, no agreement was reached. Maatsen, who extended his contract for another year in January with a release clause, is set to leave this summer. Currently, he is with the Netherlands squad at Euro 2024 in Germany, delaying any final contract signatures or medical checks until after their upcoming match against France in Leipzig. Chelsea originally acquired Maatsen from PSV Eindhoven in 2019, and after multiple loan spells, including at Dortmund, he found limited success under coach Mauricio Pochettino. Maatsen’s stint at Chelsea concludes with 16 appearances.
