FIFA president Gianni Infantino has responded to criticism surrounding the recent World Cup, arguing that negative coverage ignored the tournament’s achievements. In an open letter released on Monday, he described the competition as a celebration of unity, safety and inclusion while accusing critics of promoting false narratives.
The tournament, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico and won by Spain, brought together millions of supporters according to Infantino, who said its positive impact had been overshadowed by constant criticism.
Infantino Says Critics Ignored the Tournament’s Success
In his letter, the 56 year old FIFA president claimed that those criticising the World Cup had focused only on negative stories instead of recognising what happened throughout the event.
He argued that FIFA successfully delivered a safe tournament without violence or major incidents. According to Infantino, fans experienced an atmosphere of celebration and happiness while organisers worked to ensure security and smooth operations across the competition.
FIFA Stands by Decisions on Balogun and Visa Issues
Infantino also defended FIFA’s handling of several controversial issues that emerged during the World Cup. One of the biggest debates followed the decision to overturn the automatic one match suspension for United States forward Folarin Balogun after intervention from Donald Trump.
He also addressed complaints about refereeing during Argentina’s round of 16 victory over Egypt, where Egypt coach Hossam Hassan strongly questioned several decisions. Infantino argued that similar disciplinary reviews are common in many major football leagues and suggested it was inconsistent for those same countries to criticise FIFA’s approach.
Regarding travel concerns, he stated that Iran’s national team entered the United States without conflict and insisted football should remain separate from politics. He added that countries facing health or other serious challenges were still granted visas when appropriate.
Letter Expected to Fuel Further Debate
Despite Infantino’s defence, his comments are expected to attract additional criticism. FIFA faced scrutiny throughout the tournament over visa restrictions affecting supporters and officials, along with concerns involving participants from regions affected by conflict.
The latest remarks also revive attention around Infantino’s previous public statements before the World Cup in Qatar, which generated widespread discussion and criticism at the time.
