Bruno Guimaraes has informed Newcastle that he would like to join Arsenal, with the Premier League champions viewing the Brazilian as a player capable of improving Mikel Arteta’s midfield immediately.
Only two days after Arsenal celebrated their title victory at Selhurst Park in May, co-chair Josh Kroenke had already turned his attention towards the future.
Supporters were still enjoying the club’s success, but Kroenke stressed that standing still was not an option.
“If you are not continually trying to evolve and improve, you are standing still,” he said during an interview at Arsenal’s training ground.
Kroenke spoke openly about the difficulty of following a championship season. Arsenal had completed the long process of building a squad capable of finishing first, but the next challenge was to remain there while every rival attempted to close the gap.
The club, he explained, had entered its “win window”. Recruitment would therefore focus on players who could contribute immediately rather than prospects requiring several seasons to develop.
Arsenal believe the foundations of the team are already strong. Their priority now is to add proven quality and establish a sustained period of success.
Arsenal Use Their Champion Status to Attract Guimaraes
After assembling a title-winning squad, Arsenal can now present themselves as one of the most attractive destinations in English football.
That status has helped them move for Guimaraes, who has told Newcastle that he wants to complete a transfer to north London.
The Brazil international will turn 29 in November. If Arsenal pay a substantial fee for him, he would become the oldest major signing of the Kroenke era.
Age appears to be less important at this point in the club’s development. Arsenal are no longer building only for a distant future. They want players who can enter Arteta’s team and raise its standard from the first week.
Guimaraes fits that requirement. He has spent four and a half seasons at Newcastle, making 153 appearances in the Premier League and developing into one of the competition’s leading central midfielders.
He also offers the experience of competing in domestic finals, European football and high-pressure matches. Arsenal would be signing a player already familiar with the demands of English football rather than someone who might need a lengthy period of adaptation.
Reliability Makes the Newcastle Captain Even More Valuable
Guimaraes has been remarkably dependable since completing his first full Premier League season.
He has played more than 85 per cent of the available minutes during that period, placing him among the division’s most regularly used players.
That record is particularly attractive to Arsenal following a campaign in which several midfielders struggled with fatigue and physical problems.
Guimaraes has shown that he can cope with a heavy schedule while maintaining a high level of intensity. His ability to avoid long injury absences also suggests that he could continue performing deep into his career.
Newcastle have relied on him for both control and leadership. He has become their captain and one of the main representatives of Eddie Howe’s aggressive, energetic style.
His durability, however, is only part of his appeal.
Guimaraes Combines Defensive Strength With Creative Passing
The Brazilian has developed into a complete midfielder during his time at St James’ Park.
He brings physical commitment without the ball, but he is also capable of progressing possession through crowded areas and creating chances with ambitious passes.
Since 2022, Guimaraes has ranked among the Premier League’s top five players for both tackles and through balls.
The first category usually contains defensive specialists such as Joao Palhinha and Moises Caicedo. The second is more commonly led by creators such as Bruno Fernandes and Martin Odegaard.
Guimaraes appearing near the top of both lists demonstrates the range of his game.
Even during a difficult season for Newcastle, he remained one of the most productive central midfielders in the Premier League. His numbers remained strong across several areas, including ball recovery, forward passing and chance creation.
His aggression when pressing opponents would suit Arteta’s approach. Arsenal have built much of their success on controlling games physically, winning second balls and preventing rivals from playing through midfield.
Guimaraes could help preserve that strength while adding more invention in possession.
Arsenal Need More Creativity From Central Midfield
Arsenal’s threat from set pieces has become one of their biggest weapons, but their attacking play in open situations has occasionally lacked imagination.
Arteta needs more players who can break defensive lines from central areas, especially when opponents defend deep and leave little space around the penalty area.
Declan Rice remains one of Arsenal’s most important players, while Martin Zubimendi still has a major role to play. Guimaraes, however, offers a more adventurous passing profile than either of them.
Last season, he directed a greater share of his passes forward and completed those forward balls with a higher accuracy rate.
He also averaged more passes that broke opposition lines, more through balls and more chances created from open play per 90 minutes.
Those qualities could help Arsenal move the ball into dangerous zones more quickly. Instead of circulating possession in front of a compact defence, Guimaraes is willing to attempt passes between defenders or into the path of runners.
That willingness to take responsibility could give Arsenal another route towards goal when their usual attacking patterns are blocked.
Arteta Could Use Him as a No 6 or a No 8
Guimaraes also provides tactical flexibility.
Like Rice, he is comfortable playing as a holding midfielder or in a more advanced central role.
Arteta could position him at the base of midfield when Arsenal need to increase the speed of their build-up. His awareness and passing range would help the team move through pressure and reach the attacking players earlier.
He could also operate as a No 8 against opponents who sit close to their own penalty area. From that position, Guimaraes would be able to combine near the box, play through balls and make late runs into scoring positions.
His reputation has largely been built on strong tackles and emotional leadership. Those characteristics reflect the identity Newcastle have developed under Howe, but they do not tell the full story.
The midfielder also contributes regularly in the final third.
Across his 153 Premier League matches for Newcastle, Guimaraes has recorded 55 combined goals and assists. He has reached double figures for direct goal contributions in each of the last three seasons.
That consistency would offer Arsenal another source of goals at a time when Arteta wants more productivity from midfield.
A Transfer Could Change Arsenal’s Existing Midfield Order
Signing Guimaraes would create questions about how Arsenal plan to use some of their current options.
Myles Lewis-Skelly moved ahead of Zubimendi towards the end of last season and strengthened his claim for a regular place. Guimaraes arriving would add further competition in an already crowded area of the squad.
Arteta, however, would also gain the ability to manage workloads more carefully.
Arsenal played 63 matches during their title-winning season. The schedule placed considerable pressure on a group of players who were required to perform every few days across several competitions.
Zubimendi appeared to feel the effects during the second half of the campaign. Fatigue contributed to a decline in his form after he had played a major role earlier in the season.
Rice has faced similar physical demands. During the World Cup, he revealed that his workload had left him dealing with neural pain in his back and groin.
Adding another elite midfielder would reduce the need to use Rice, Zubimendi or other key players in every match. It would also give Arteta more freedom to select his midfield according to the opposition.
Guimaraes Would Arrive to Raise Arsenal’s Level
Arsenal clearly need greater depth in central midfield, but Guimaraes would not be signed simply to cover minutes.
He would arrive expecting to compete for a starting place and increase the quality of the team.
His Premier League experience, physical intensity, passing range and leadership make him well suited to a club attempting to defend its title.
The move would also reflect Arsenal’s changing position under the Kroenkes. Previous transfer windows focused heavily on constructing the core of a competitive squad. The club can now target established players who are ready to contribute at the highest level.
Arsenal have already reached the summit. Their next objective is to remain there and turn one successful season into an era of control.
Guimaraes could become a central figure in that plan.
