Szoboszlai commits to Liverpool after interest from an elite European club

Dominik Szoboszlai had reportedly become a leading transfer objective for one of Europe’s biggest clubs ahead of 2027, but the midfielder has now ended the speculation by agreeing a new long term contract with Liverpool.

The Hungary international has signed a five year deal that will place him among the highest paid players at Anfield. Liverpool have now secured the future of one of their most influential footballers and avoided the risk of entering a difficult contract situation.

Liverpool acted before rival clubs could make their move

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Szoboszlai had attracted serious interest from a major European side before reaching an agreement with Liverpool.

Real Madrid are considered the most likely club involved. The Spanish team could have waited until 2027, when the midfielder would have entered the final year of his previous contract. Szoboszlai has also spoken positively about the Madrid club in the past.

Romano claimed that several clubs had already started gathering information about the player’s contract situation and wanted to know whether he intended to remain at Liverpool.

According to the reporter, Szoboszlai would have become a priority target for a leading club if Liverpool had failed to reach an extension agreement within the following weeks or months. By finalising the deal early, the Reds protected themselves from growing transfer pressure.

New contract reflects Szoboszlai’s importance

Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig for £60 million in 2023. Reports at the time suggested that his weekly salary was close to £120,000.

That agreement was considered favourable for Liverpool, especially after the club had also examined a possible move for Mason Mount. The financial demands connected with Mount’s transfer reportedly included wages of approximately £250,000 per week.

Since arriving at Anfield, Szoboszlai has developed into a central figure in Liverpool’s midfield. His performances and increasing influence mean his new salary is expected to place him near the top of the club’s wage structure.

Liverpool have created more space in the wage budget

The departures of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate reportedly removed a substantial amount from Liverpool’s salary commitments. Salah alone was believed to earn as much as £480,000 per week when bonuses were included.

Szoboszlai is not expected to receive a salary at that level, but his new agreement could reportedly be worth close to £300,000 per week.

The exact figure may become clearer in later reports, although supporters are likely to focus more on the length of the contract. The midfielder is now committed to Liverpool until 2031.

Extension strengthens Liverpool’s position

The new contract does not completely remove the possibility of a future transfer. Real Madrid or another wealthy club could still make an offer in the coming seasons.

However, the extension ensures Liverpool remain in a strong negotiating position and protects the player’s market value. It also gives Szoboszlai the opportunity to continue his development at Anfield while moving closer to becoming one of the leading midfielders in European football.
