Chelsea have signed England forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal reported to be worth £117 million, setting a new British transfer record.
The 23 year old has agreed a long term contract with the London club that will run until 2033. Chelsea did not confirm the transfer fee, but reports published on Tuesday placed the value of the agreement at £117 million, approximately $156.5 million.
That figure exceeds the previous British record set earlier this month, when Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest £116 million for England midfielder Elliot Anderson.
The Premier League’s overall transfer record remains Alexander Isak’s £125 million move from Newcastle United to Liverpool last year.
Rogers joins Chelsea on contract until 2033
Rogers arrives at Stamford Bridge after establishing himself as one of the leading attacking players in the Premier League. He can operate in several forward positions and has developed into a regular member of the England squad.
Speaking after completing the transfer, Rogers said he was delighted to join a club he had admired since childhood. He also pointed to Chelsea’s new sporting project, the appointment of manager Xabi Alonso and the quality of the current squad as important reasons behind his decision.
Rogers becomes Chelsea’s third major signing of the summer under Alonso. The club had already strengthened both sides of its defence by bringing in wing backs Marco Palestra and Geovany Quenda.
Chelsea hope the new arrivals can help the team recover from a disappointing domestic campaign. The London side finished 10th in the Premier League last season and will begin the new league season away against Fulham on August 24.
The transfer also makes Rogers the most expensive signing in Chelsea’s history. The previous club record belonged to Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion for £115 million in 2023.
Strong performances for Aston Villa and England
Rogers leaves Aston Villa after scoring 21 goals in 85 Premier League appearances. Last season, he played a major role as Villa secured a top four finish and won the Europa League.
His rise has been particularly rapid considering the fee Villa originally paid for him. The Birmingham club signed Rogers from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for a reported £8 million, around $10.5 million.
His performances at club level soon earned international recognition. Rogers made his senior England debut in November 2024 and has since collected 22 appearances for the national team.
He was also part of the England squad that finished third at the World Cup last week. England lost 2 to 1 against Argentina in the semifinal before defeating France in the third place match.
Rogers now joins Chelsea as an established international and one of the most valuable young attacking players in English football. His ability to score, create chances and play across several positions should give Alonso additional options in the final third.
The size of the transfer fee will bring considerable expectations, but Chelsea believe Rogers can become a central figure in their long term plans. His contract until 2033 underlines the club’s commitment to building its attack around younger players with Premier League and international experience.
