Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has ruled out the prospect of the club spending £100m on a single player this summer, pointing to the financial limits currently shaping their transfer strategy. He also confirmed that Marcus Rashford is back with the first team, even though both the forward and United remain open to a departure before the window closes.
United have already committed a combined £85m to the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos during the current transfer window. However, the club have never paid £100m for one player.
That separates them from Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea, all of whom have completed transfers worth more than £100m in recent years.
Carrick accepts United’s financial limitations
Asked how Manchester United can compete with rivals capable of spending such sums, Carrick acknowledged that finances are part of the equation but stressed that results are ultimately decided on the pitch.
The manager said the squad’s focus remains on winning matches and making the most of the resources available. While financial circumstances influence recruitment, Carrick believes there are other factors that determine whether a team can compete at the highest level.
United finished third last season under Carrick and secured Champions League qualification. The manager was subsequently questioned about why the additional income from returning to Europe’s leading club competition could not be used to bring in elite players at premium prices.
Carrick admitted he could not provide a detailed explanation of the club’s finances. His priority is to work with the situation in front of him and find every possible way to strengthen a squad that is trying to challenge again.
The 45 year old was also asked whether a team without a player valued at £100m or more could realistically win the Premier League title.
Carrick believes the answer depends heavily on the needs of the squad and the position being strengthened. There can be moments when paying a major fee for the right footballer makes sense, but he does not view transfer value alone as the deciding factor.
United still intend to improve the squad. Carrick described the business already completed this summer as positive while making it clear that the club would like to add further quality before the transfer window ends.
Rashford returns following Barcelona loan
Marcus Rashford joined Manchester United’s training camp in County Kildare on Sunday after receiving time off following the World Cup.
The 28 year old spent the previous season and a half away from Old Trafford on loan spells with Barcelona and Aston Villa. Those moves followed a deterioration in his relationship with senior figures at United and former head coach Ruben Amorim.
The situation has since become calmer, and Rashford is now concentrating on working under Carrick. However, the forward would still prefer to leave Manchester United, while the club are also prepared for a transfer as they attempt to reduce their wage commitments.
Rashford has two years remaining on his contract, with those final seasons reportedly worth a combined £35m.
When Carrick was asked whether the England forward would still be at United after the 1 September deadline, he stressed that Rashford remains a Manchester United player and praised the way he has trained since returning to the group.
Carrick sees a role for Rashford despite transfer uncertainty
Carrick also spoke positively about Rashford’s ability and argued that difficult periods are normal during a long career. The manager believes individual setbacks should be judged in the context of a player’s wider contribution rather than treated as defining moments.
United are currently in a more positive position as a squad, according to Carrick, and he feels Rashford possesses qualities that can still be valuable to the team. The forward has previously made a major contribution at Old Trafford and the manager believes he remains capable of doing so again.
Carrick stopped short of declaring Rashford unavailable for transfer. Instead, he repeated that the attacker is currently part of his squad and offers a different profile from several of United’s other offensive options.
The uncertainty surrounding Rashford therefore remains unresolved heading into the final weeks of the transfer window.
United continue to target a title challenge
Several Manchester United players, including Harry Maguire, Noussair Mazraoui and new arrival Tielemans, have already spoken about the possibility of challenging for the Premier League title this season.
Carrick shares that ambition and believes the squad has the potential to achieve something substantial. He is unwilling to guarantee a championship challenge, but insists a club of United’s stature should set demanding targets.
For now, the manager’s task is to improve the squad within the financial framework available to him while preparing his current players for the new campaign. Further signings remain possible, although a £100m transfer appears to be outside United’s plans this summer.
