Sporting captain unhappy with the flow of the match
Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand voiced his disappointment after his side’s Champions League exit against Arsenal, pointing to the lack of tempo in the second leg. The match in London ended 0-0, which was enough for Arsenal to move on thanks to their 1-0 win from the first meeting.
Hjulmand felt the contest never found its rhythm and described it as a frustrating experience for both players and spectators. In his view, the game lacked intensity and failed to produce the kind of football Sporting wanted to show over the two legs.
Set pieces became a major source of frustration
One of Hjulmand’s main complaints was Arsenal’s approach during dead ball situations. He believed too much time was taken at set pieces, which repeatedly broke up play and prevented Sporting from building momentum.
The midfielder said those interruptions made it difficult for his team to settle into the game. He also admitted that from a neutral point of view, the match was unlikely to leave much impression, especially with no goals and limited rhythm across the full ninety minutes.
Sporting regret missed chances but keep pride in performance
Although Sporting had several promising moments, they were unable to turn them into goals. Hjulmand accepted that his side had not done enough in attack to fully deserve a win, even if the team did create some danger, especially in the first half.
Head coach Rui Borges also chose to focus on the positive side of the performance. He praised the squad for the personality and determination they showed against one of Europe’s strongest teams and said the players had every reason to feel proud of their effort across both matches.
Arsenal move on as Sporting look ahead
Sporting leave the competition with disappointment, but also with signs that they can compete at a high level on the European stage. The team now turns its attention to the rest of the season, hoping to carry that level into future matches.
Arsenal, meanwhile, continue their run in the tournament and reach the Champions League semi finals for the second straight season, a first in the club’s history.
