Southampton open review after Middlesbrough spying allegations

Southampton have started an internal review after allegations that one of their analysts watched a Middlesbrough training session without permission. The issue emerged before the Championship playoff semi-final second leg between the clubs.

EFL charge arrives before playoff decider

The English Football League charged Southampton with misconduct on the eve of their first-leg draw against Middlesbrough. That match ended 0-0, leaving the tie open before the return game at Southampton.

Middlesbrough believe they found a member of Southampton’s backroom staff on club premises last Thursday, 48 hours before the first leg. The case will now be assessed by an independent disciplinary commission.

Possible punishments range from a fine to removal from the playoffs. Middlesbrough are understood to believe a financial penalty would not be enough if Southampton are found guilty.

Southampton ask for full context before judgment

Southampton have not accepted or denied the allegations. Chief executive Phil Parsons said the club is cooperating fully with the EFL and the disciplinary commission while also carrying out its own review.

Parsons said Southampton want all facts and context to be properly understood before conclusions are made. He also pointed to the busy fixture schedule and the short turnaround between playoff matches as reasons for needing time to complete the process carefully.

Club says focus remains on Middlesbrough match

Parsons added that he knows the character of the people inside Southampton and believes the unity between players, staff and supporters will not be affected by the case.

For now, the club’s attention turns to the second leg against Middlesbrough. The result will decide who advances in the playoffs, while the disciplinary process continues in the background.
