McGinn makes playful royal request after Villa end 44-year European drought

Captain urges Prince William to join celebrations

Aston Villa captain John McGinn did not hesitate after his team lifted the Europa League trophy. Following their convincing 3-0 win over Freiburg in Istanbul he made a light-hearted appeal to dedicated supporter Prince William asking him to bring out his credit card for the victory party.

The 43 year old royal attended the match in Turkey and was present in the dressing room before kickoff. McGinn described him as a classy and normal guy who is a genuine massive fan of the club. He expressed hope that the support would continue and invited the prince to have drinks with the squad that night.

Villa dominate to secure first European honour since 1982

Goals from Youri Tielemans Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers gave Aston Villa a comfortable victory. Tielemans opened the scoring in the 40th minute with a clever corner routine. Buendia added a second just before halftime with a beautiful curled shot from outside the box. Rogers sealed the result early in the second half with a close-range finish.

Freiburg never recovered after falling behind and Villa controlled the game without facing serious threats in the final stages. This success marks the club’s first European trophy in 44 years since their European Cup and Super Cup wins in 1982.

Prince William later posted on social media to celebrate the achievement. He congratulated the players staff and everyone connected to the club and gave special mention to injured midfielder Boubacar Kamara for his important role in building the foundation for this victory.

The night in Istanbul delivered a memorable moment for Villa fans and created a special connection between the team and one of its most prominent supporters.
