Mathys Tel error leaves Tottenham exposed in survival race

Mathys Tel produced Tottenham’s brightest moment against Leeds United, then made the mistake that turned the match. His superb second-half goal looked capable of giving Spurs a vital win, but a reckless overhead kick inside his own penalty area led to the spot-kick that made it 1-1.

Tel scores a brilliant opener before costly penalty incident

Tottenham needed three points to create more space from West Ham United, but the home side left the pitch with only one. Tel had seemed ready to become the decisive figure for the right reasons when he opened the scoring in the 50th minute.

The chance came after a deflected corner dropped kindly to him in space. He still had plenty to do, but his finish was excellent. Tel guided a rising shot into the top corner past Karl Darlow, giving Spurs a lead that felt huge in the context of the relegation fight.

Before that, Roberto De Zerbi’s team had already put Leeds under long spells of pressure. Joao Palhinha burst through and fired over, Rodrigo Bentancur missed a header he should have converted, while Pedro Porro and Tel repeatedly caused problems from wide areas.

Spurs looked aggressive and more structured than they had earlier in the season, which made their position near the bottom feel even harder to explain. Under De Zerbi, there is now a clearer identity, but the damage from earlier months still leaves them in danger.

Calvert-Lewin punishes Spurs after VAR review

Leeds had already given Tottenham a warning before half-time. Dominic Calvert-Lewin went through and was brought down by Destiny Udogie, but the penalty appeal disappeared when VAR showed the Leeds striker was offside by the narrowest of margins.

The reprieve did not last. In the 73rd minute, Ethan Ampadu threatened to get in behind and Tel was the player between him and the ball. Instead of making a simple clearance, the Tottenham winger tried an overhead kick with Ampadu close to him.

Tel caught the midfielder on the head, giving referee Jarred Gillett a clear decision after checking the pitchside monitor. The review took longer than needed, but the final call was hard to argue against.

Calvert-Lewin showed no hesitation from 12 yards. His penalty was struck cleanly and pulled Leeds level, turning Tottenham’s promising night into another damaging result.

Maddison appeal and Kinsky save add to late drama

James Maddison returned from the bench after the equaliser and almost gave Tottenham the dramatic moment they needed. He moved into the box and went down after a challenge from Lukas Nmecha, but Gillett quickly decided there was no foul.

That decision mattered almost as much as the penalty at the other end. Instead of Spurs moving four points clear of West Ham, the gap stayed at two. For Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, it was a major escape after their own controversial 1-0 defeat to Arsenal a day earlier.

Antonin Kinsky also had a major part in preserving the draw. His late save to push a Leeds effort onto the bar may prove as important for Tottenham as David Raya’s intervention was for Arsenal against West Ham.

Leeds, already safe after Arsenal’s win over West Ham confirmed their survival, still played with real intensity. Their supporters celebrated that status by singing that Leeds were staying up, but the team showed no sign of treating the match like a formality.

West Ham remain close enough to catch Spurs

The draw leaves Tottenham under heavy pressure. West Ham are now only two points behind, a difference that can disappear in one round rather than two.

The next fixtures make the situation even more tense. West Ham travel to Newcastle United, while Tottenham face Chelsea away. After that, every decision, miss and save could shape who stays in the Premier League.

For Tottenham, Tel’s night summed up the danger perfectly. One brilliant finish gave them hope, but one rash decision inside his own box left their survival battle far more fragile.
