“It is abuse… enough is enough”: Marcus Rashford’s message to Man Utd fans – posted at 12.36am
Marcus Rashford has spoken out against the abuse he has received this season, declaring “enough is enough.”
The Manchester United forward has faced a challenging season, managing to score only eight goals across all competitions. With Erik ten Hag’s team at risk of not qualifying for the Champions League, Rashford’s frustration is palpable.
Challenging Season at Manchester United
The Manchester United forward has had a tough season, managing to score only eight goals across all competitions, with Erik ten Hag’s team facing the risk of missing out on Champions League qualification.
Rashford faced jeers when he was substituted during United’s dramatic FA Cup match against the Championship team Coventry last week. In this match, Ten Hag’s squad barely advanced to the final via penalties after squandering a 3-0 lead, ending in a 3-3 draw after extra time.
Throughout the season, Rashford has been a frequent target of criticism on social media. Early Friday morning, shortly after midnight, he replied to a tweet from a fan’s account stating: “The way Marcus Rashford is being treated is absolutely disgusting. It’s cruel. It’s abuse.”
Rashford responded with: “I appreciate your support! It is abuse and has been for months. Enough is enough.”
Ten Hag Expresses Support for Rashford Amid Challenges
Asked about Marcus Rashford’s situation before Manchester United’s match against Burnley, Erik ten Hag expressed deep sympathy for the player. “I have a lot of sympathy for Rashy. Last year, he had an outstanding season, the best in his career, scoring 30 goals. You can see what he’s capable of,” Ten Hag remarked. Despite a less impressive performance this season, which has drawn significant criticism, Ten Hag emphasized the need for support: “I think we have to back him. Everyone should back him and push him to return to last year’s levels.”
Ten Hag also noted that Rashford requires both support and motivation to overcome his current struggles: “He can do better than he is doing this year, and we have seen his brilliance last year.”
Additionally, Rashford’s personal life has faced complications. Last month, his mother cautioned him against negative influences and shared details of personal difficulties that have affected his performance. Rashford faced a penalty of two weeks’ wages, approximately £650,000, for a night out in Belfast that resulted in him missing training and an FA Cup game against Newport County. Earlier in the season, he was also admonished for staying out late after a 3-0 defeat by Manchester City.
Cautionary Advice from Melanie Maynard
Melanie Maynard cautioned her son that not all individuals surrounding him might possess noble intentions.
“Marcus, being human, will experience highs and lows just like anyone else,” Maynard penned in the Times.
“He is currently in an excellent state and will not disappoint anyone. However, one must always be cautious of the motives of others – it’s possible that some might be wolves in sheep’s clothing.”
Maynard also disclosed how Rashford grappled with coping after the demise of his cousin Nathan last year, following the earlier loss of a close family friend named Garf in 2022.
Rashford tallied 30 goals for United in the previous season before inking a new five-year deal. He was sidelined from the 4-2 victory over Sheffield United midweek due to an injury.
