Manchester United prepare major midfield reset for the summer

Club sees midfield as the main area that needs changes

Manchester United are heading into the summer with midfield firmly at the top of their priority list. Recent matches have only reinforced the view that the squad needs fresh quality in that area if the team is to compete on several fronts next season.

The contrast in performances with and without Kobbie Mainoo has made that especially clear. His absence was badly felt in the defeat to Leeds, while his return against Chelsea helped bring more calm and structure to the side. Even if the overall display was not flawless, United looked more balanced with him back in the team.

Mainoo stays central to the plan, but help is needed

Mainoo is seen as a key part of the club’s future and is expected to sign a new contract soon. Even so, United know they cannot go into another demanding season relying on only a small number of trusted midfielders.

With Casemiro set to leave at the end of the campaign, the club want at least two new midfielders to strengthen the department. If Manuel Ugarte also departs, that number could even rise to three. The aim is not just to add bodies, but to build a midfield unit with the right mix of energy, control and passing quality.

The profile of the new signings is being carefully considered

One of United’s biggest goals is to find a long term replacement for Casemiro in the holding role. The club want someone who can cover ground, defend effectively and also move the ball forward well. Just as important is finding a player who fits naturally alongside Mainoo.

That is why not every admired midfielder is seen as the perfect answer. Adam Wharton, for example, is appreciated for his passing ability, but there is a belief that he is too similar in style to Mainoo to form the ideal pairing in a double pivot.

Several names are being watched, but prices are a problem

United are interested in players such as Elliot Anderson and Aurélien Tchouaméni, both of whom are seen as strong options because of their mobility, quality and overall profile. Anderson fits many of the club’s requirements in terms of age and style, but the cost of signing him could be extremely high if Nottingham Forest stay up.

Tchouaméni is also viewed as an appealing target, though any move for him would depend on how other deals develop across the market. His future may be linked to wider changes at Real Madrid, which means United would need several things to fall into place before having a realistic chance.

Other options remain under discussion

United have also looked at a range of alternative midfielders. Sandro Tonali has been admired, while Carlos Baleba is another player the club have studied. Mateus Fernandes, João Gomes and Alex Scott are among other names being considered as the club weighs up price, availability and tactical fit.

The common thread is that United do not want to repeat past mistakes by signing players without a clear plan. The club know the budget is limited, so they are trying to be more precise in how they build the midfield this time.

Summer decisions could shape the next phase of the project

Those leading the recruitment process understand how important this window will be. If United want to handle Premier League demands, European football and deeper domestic cup runs, they need a midfield capable of coping with all of it.

That is why so much focus is now on this part of the squad. The club believe the right decisions this summer could have a major impact on the direction of the team over the next few seasons.
