Manchester United’s Alarming Stats After 3-0 Defeat to Tottenham

Manchester United

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at home to Tottenham, highlighting the growing concerns surrounding the team’s performance this season. Gary Neville called it one of the worst displays under Ten Hag’s reign, and the numbers back that up.

Defensive Frailties

Before Bruno Fernandes’ red card, Tottenham were already tearing through United’s defense. Micky van de Ven’s early run through five United players to assist Brennan Johnson demonstrated the ease with which Spurs could exploit the gaps in the defense. The 4.67 xG (expected goals) Tottenham registered was the worst defensive performance United have shown in 258 Premier League games.

Home Troubles Continue

Old Trafford, once a fortress, has become a venue where the opposition finds success. United have lost eight of their last 20 home games in the Premier League, compared to zero defeats in the 20 matches before that. For season ticket holders, consecutive 3-0 home losses, including the earlier defeat to Liverpool, have been particularly painful.

Attacking Misfires

United’s finishing has been a persistent issue. They have scored only five goals from an xG of 10.6, making them the biggest underperformers in front of goal in the league. Sunday’s game against Spurs saw them create no big chances, and their conversion rate of 10.53% ranks among the worst in the league.

Record Breakers in the Wrong Way

Ten Hag’s United currently sit 12th in the Premier League with just seven points, their joint-worst start to a season. Last season, they finished eighth, their lowest Premier League finish, and early signs suggest another struggle ahead.

Money Spent, but No Results

United have spent over £600 million on signings under Ten Hag, with many of the squad against Spurs made up of players he brought in. Despite this investment, the team has struggled to deliver consistent results, and pressure on Ten Hag continues to grow.

With defensive vulnerabilities and offensive struggles piling up, Ten Hag faces increasing pressure to turn things around quickly.
