United take control, then lose it
Manchester United secured a tense 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford, with Kobbie Mainoo scoring the decisive goal late in the second half. The result confirmed United’s place in next season’s Champions League and added more weight to Michael Carrick’s case for the permanent job.
United began sharply and built a 2-0 lead before the break through Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. They looked in control for long spells, but Liverpool forced their way back after half time. Dominik Szoboszlai pulled one back, and Cody Gakpo then finished off another United mistake to make it 2-2.
Mainoo changes the mood again
The home side might have been shaken by losing a two-goal lead, but Mainoo restored calm with the biggest moment of the match. After a poor clearance reached him near the edge of the area, he finished with composure and sent Old Trafford into celebration.
The win gave United a league double over Liverpool for the first time in years and kept them on course for third place. It also came on a difficult day for the club, with Sir Alex Ferguson missing the match after feeling unwell before kick off. Carrick’s team still found a way through, and the result strengthened the sense that his interim spell has changed the season.
