Former Newcastle defender weighs in on transfer talk
Former Newcastle player John Anderson does not believe Anthony Gordon should be valued at £100m, although he accepts the final figure could depend on how strongly interest grows around the winger.
Speaking about the situation, Anderson said Gordon is clearly worth more than £50m to £55m, but argued that a £100m price tag feels too high. He also cast doubt on whether Bayern Munich would be in a position to meet such a valuation if they decided to pursue the player.
Newcastle warned against a long transfer saga
Anderson also pointed to the danger of letting uncertainty drag on if Gordon were to push for a move away from the club. In his view, Newcastle would not want a repeat of the kind of situation that leaves planning unsettled and forces the club into rushed decisions late in the transfer window.
He recalled how damaging that kind of uncertainty can be, with the club left reacting at the last moment and scrambling to find replacements instead of working from a clear plan.
Much may depend on the market
Amid continued speculation around Gordon, Anderson suggested that the discussion is no longer only about what the player is worth in theory, but also about what a club may actually be prepared to pay.
That leaves Newcastle facing a familiar problem. If interest becomes serious and the player’s future turns uncertain, the club may have to balance its valuation with the reality of the market and the need to avoid another drawn out transfer story.
