Phil Foden agrees new Manchester City contract despite difficult run of form

Phil Foden has reached an agreement in principle over a new four year contract with Manchester City. The deal is expected to keep the England midfielder at the Etihad Stadium until 2030, with an option for one more season.

City show faith in Foden

Foden’s current contract was due to expire next summer, but the new agreement shows that both the club and the player remain committed to continuing together.

The timing is notable because the 25 year old has struggled for consistency in recent months and has not scored since 14 December.

A key player despite recent struggles

Foden came off the bench in City’s six goal thriller against Everton, a result that left Pep Guardiola’s side five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal with a game in hand.

Even though he has not been at his best, City clearly still view him as an important part of their long term plans.

World Cup place not guaranteed

Foden is also trying to secure his place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup.

Tuchel recently made it clear that Foden is not guaranteed a spot, even though he started both matches in England’s final international camp before the tournament.

Rooney wants Foden playing every week

Wayne Rooney believes Foden should remain in City’s starting line up. The former England captain said he enjoys watching the midfielder’s movement and creativity, and feels a player of his quality should not spend long periods on the bench.

Rooney also suggested that Guardiola may be weighing up defensive balance when choosing between Foden and more direct wide options.

A decorated City career continues

Foden made his first team debut under Guardiola at 17 and has since become one of the most decorated players of his generation.

He has already made 365 appearances for City and won six Premier League titles, one Champions League and two FA Cups. The new deal now gives him the chance to add even more to that record.
