England survive Mexico scare to book World Cup quarter final spot

England secured a hard fought victory over Mexico in an intense World Cup last 16 clash to earn a place in the quarter finals, where Norway now awaits. The match at the Azteca Stadium began an hour later than planned because of severe weather, adding another layer of drama to an unforgettable evening.

Thomas Tuchel’s side overcame a hostile atmosphere and spent much of the second half with ten players after Jarell Quansah’s dismissal. Even so, England held their nerve to complete one of their most impressive victories in recent tournaments.

Bellingham inspires England before Mexico fight back

England made a confident start and gradually took control of the contest. Jude Bellingham proved to be the difference before half time, scoring twice in just 98 seconds to give his side a commanding advantage.

Mexico responded before the interval when Julián Quiñones powered home to reduce the deficit, giving the home supporters fresh belief. The momentum shifted further after the restart when Quansah received a red card for a high challenge on Jesús Gallardo.

Despite being down to ten men, England regained a two goal cushion after Anthony Gordon was fouled inside the penalty area and Harry Kane converted the resulting spot kick. Mexico refused to give up, however, and Raúl Jiménez scored from the penalty spot after Kane was judged to have fouled Brian Gutiérrez inside the box.

With the hosts pushing forward during a lengthy period of stoppage time, Tuchel strengthened his defence by introducing Dan Burn and Djed Spence. England successfully protected their lead to secure a place in the next round.

Pickford and Tuchel play key roles in England’s victory

England faced one of the toughest environments of the tournament, with Mexico backed by a passionate crowd at the high altitude of the Azteca Stadium. The team responded with discipline and resilience throughout the contest.

Bellingham delivered an outstanding all around performance, combining his two goals with an important last ditch tackle that prevented César Montes from equalising just before half time.

Jordan Pickford also played a decisive role in the victory. The England goalkeeper produced several outstanding saves, including two excellent stops to deny Raúl Jiménez, while remaining composed under constant pressure. His performance matched Peter Shilton’s England men’s record of 17 World Cup appearances and highlighted his importance to the national team.

Tuchel’s tactical approach also proved effective. England stayed compact for long periods, absorbed Mexico’s attacking pressure and defended with determination during the closing minutes to complete a memorable win and continue their World Cup campaign.
