England dominate possession but fail to break Ghana down
England were frustrated after being held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana in their second FIFA 2026 World Cup group match, despite controlling large parts of the game. Chelsea captain Reece James once again started at right-back and played a key role in helping England secure their first clean sheet of the tournament.
After opening the campaign with a win over Croatia, England needed another victory to guarantee progression to the last 32. However, Ghana matched their intensity and stayed compact throughout the match in Boston, limiting clear chances for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
England enjoyed 79 per cent possession and spent long spells in Ghana’s half, but goalkeeper Benjamin Asare was rarely tested in the first half. The pattern remained after the break, with England in control of the ball but struggling to turn it into real danger.
Late chances, near misses, and James involvement define the finish
Ghana still carried a threat on the counterattack, with Prince Kwabena Adu coming closest after breaking through the England defence, only for Ezri Konsa and Reece James to stop the move just in time near the goal line area.
England increased their pressure late on, creating their best opportunities in the final minutes. Harry Kane forced a save from Asare, while Bukayo Saka also saw his effort denied after coming off the bench. James played a key attacking role in the 87th minute, delivering a dangerous cross that led to a Nico O’Reilly header against the crossbar, with Kane sending the rebound over from close range.
Ghana also held firm in defence, clearing a late Marc Guehi header to preserve the draw. England finished with 19 shots, but only three on target, as both sides moved onto four points after two matches. England now face Panama in their final group game, while Ghana meet Croatia.
