Diego Forlan Makes Challenging Tennis Debut at Uruguay Open

Diego Forlan, the former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid striker, made his professional tennis debut at the age of 45, but the outcome was far from what he hoped for. Forlan, who was partnered with Argentine tennis player Federico Coria, faced Bolivian duo Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos in the doubles event at the Uruguay Open in Montevideo. The match ended with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat in just 47 minutes, on the ATP Challenger Tour, which is a level below the main ATP Tour.

A Tough Challenge on Court

Despite the loss, Forlan remained upbeat about the experience. “I hadn’t even imagined, let alone dreamed of this,” he said, emphasizing how special it was to compete against professional players. The match began with both teams holding serve, but Arias and Zeballos quickly gained control after breaking Forlan and Coria’s serve in the third game of the first set.

In the second set, Forlan and Coria struggled further, unable to break their opponents’ serve. While Forlan expressed disappointment over the loss, he was deeply grateful for the opportunity to play at such a high level of competition.

Grateful for the Experience

The atmosphere at the Uruguay Open was electric, with loud support from Forlan’s friends and family in the crowd. “The atmosphere on this court that I love so much was incredible; my friends, my family were here. It was very special, and I enjoyed it,” Forlan reflected after the match.

Though the result wasn’t in his favor, Forlan found joy in the moment, saying, “I felt like a tennis player for a moment.” His passion for tennis was clear, and the experience was undoubtedly a memorable one, even if the scoreboard didn’t reflect it.

Forlan’s Return to Tennis After Footbal

Forlan had a promising start as a junior tennis player but had left the sport behind to pursue a successful football career. After retiring from football in 2022, he returned to tennis, playing more regularly. His debut on the ITF Masters Tour earlier in 2023 was a significant milestone in his post-football career.

Partnering with Coria, a former top-50 singles player, was a challenging experience, particularly given the disparity in their professional tennis backgrounds. However, Forlan was thankful for the chance to team up with Coria. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to play with Fede,” he said, acknowledging the difficulty of stepping into such tournaments with an amateur partner.
