Great Britain claimed gold and silver in the men’s 100m final at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, with Romell Glave taking the title ahead of teammate Jeremiah Azu.
Glave powers to European 100m gold
Glave crossed the line in 10.09 seconds to secure the biggest European title of his career. His victory made him the sixth British man to win the men’s 100m crown at the championships.
Azu finished seven hundredths of a second behind his compatriot and collected silver, completing an impressive British one-two on home soil.
Following the race, Glave described the result as “total domination” by the British sprinters and said he was thrilled to win the European title in front of the home crowd.
The victory represented another step forward for Glave after he finished third in the same event at the previous European Championships two years earlier.
Glave improves on his 2024 bronze medal
Glave said turning his bronze from 2024 into a gold medal was an incredible feeling. He also revealed that his physical condition had not been completely consistent in the days before the final, but he remained determined to compete.
The British sprinter explained that he felt prepared for the occasion despite experiencing some difficult moments with his body during the previous week. Once on the track, he produced the performance required to take first place.
Azu was also pleased with his silver medal and another place on a major championship podium. He said championship competition often brings out his strongest performances and felt he had delivered his best when it mattered most in the final.
Another sprinting gold for Great Britain
Glave’s success came only 24 hours after Amy Hunt secured another European title for Great Britain in the women’s 100m final.
The two victories gave the British team consecutive gold medals in the premier sprint events, while Azu’s second place added another medal to a highly successful period for Britain’s sprinters in Birmingham.
