Phillies pursue elite high-stakes clouser Carlos Estevez

The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly showing interest in Los Angeles Angels’ closer Carlos Estévez, according to Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer. With the trade deadline approaching next Tuesday, the Angels are expected to deal the hard-throwing right-hander.

Estévez’s Stellar Performance

Estévez has been having an impressive season, boasting a 2.38 ERA over 34 innings. He has struck out nearly 26% of the batters he has faced while maintaining an exceptionally low walk rate of 4%. The closer has converted 20 of 23 save opportunities and has not allowed a run since May 21. During this remarkable streak of 18 consecutive scoreless appearances, he has permitted just five baserunners.

A Valuable Acquisition

The Angels signed Estévez from the Colorado Rockies during the 2022-23 offseason on a two-year, $13.5 million contract. Despite some struggles late last season and a few shaky outings this April, Estévez has generally been a solid investment. He has maintained the closer role, posting a 3.36 ERA over 96 1/3 innings with the Angels. His strikeout rate of 27.2% over this period is impressive, and his control has significantly improved this season.

Trade Prospects

With Estévez set to become a free agent at the end of the season and the Angels out of playoff contention, they are likely to trade him. The Phillies, seeking to strengthen their bullpen, have also shown interest in other relievers, such as Marlins’ Tanner Scott and Nationals’ Kyle Finnegan. Philadelphia’s bullpen has seen inconsistencies from pitchers like José Alvarado, Orion Kerkering, and Gregory Soto, leaving All-Star Jeff Hoffman as their most reliable late-inning option.

Potential Impact for the Phillies

Adding Estévez could provide the Phillies with the dependable late-inning relief they need for their playoff push. His impressive control and ability to maintain a low ERA under pressure make him a valuable asset for any team looking to bolster their bullpen for a deep postseason run.
