Fearnley fights past Bautista Agut
Jacob Fearnley secured Britain’s only victory on a tough day at Flushing Meadows, defeating Roberto Bautista Agut 7:5, 6:2, 5:7, 6:4 in a gruelling contest lasting three hours and 24 minutes. The Scot, who served 18 double faults, admitted nerves played a big role but was relieved to cross the finish line.
Boulter, Kartal, Jones and Harris bow out
Katie Boulter suffered a disappointing first-round loss, while Sonay Kartal exited in bizarre fashion against Beatriz Haddad Maia, with both players struggling with cramp. Debutants Fran Jones and Billy Harris also bowed out in straight sets, compounding Britain’s struggles on the opening days.
Brits left standing
With Fearnley’s win, only he, Jack Draper, Emma Raducanu, and Cameron Norrie remain in the second round, carrying British hopes forward at the 2025 US Open.
