Sinner ‘on another level’ in US Open QF, says Musetti

Musetti’s Reflections on a Tough Defeat

Lorenzo Musetti admitted that Jannik Sinner was simply too good in their US Open quarter-final clash, describing his countryman as being on “another level.” The World No. 10, who had been solid in his previous rounds, faced an uphill battle after a rough start, losing the first five games of the match. Despite improving in the second set, Musetti couldn’t find the necessary momentum to stop Sinner, who cruised to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Understanding Sinner’s Dominance

Musetti acknowledged that Sinner’s performance left him in awe, especially after Sinner dominated many rallies. “He was always leading the rally,” Musetti said. “I never played against someone who put me under this kind of pressure.” Despite having opportunities in the second set, Musetti failed to capitalize, especially missing a break point, which he felt was crucial in such a match against an opponent like Sinner.

Growth and Learning From the Defeat

Musetti, who is good friends with Sinner off the court, reflected on their last encounter at the 2023 Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, acknowledging that both players have grown since then. “A lot of things changed from our last meeting,” he said. “I think he served really well, and he was pushing me to my limit.”

Positive Outcome Despite Loss

While the loss was a tough one, Musetti’s performance in the tournament has greatly enhanced his qualification chances for the Nitto ATP Finals. With his quarter-final run, the 23-year-old moved up to eighth place in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, continuing his bid for a spot in the prestigious season-ending event.
