Two Riders Killed in Horrific British Superbikes Crash at Oulton Park

Two motorcyclists, Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson, tragically lost their lives after a devastating crash during the British Superbikes event at Oulton Park in Cheshire on Monday. The incident involved a chain reaction after the first turn of the race and resulted in fatal injuries for both riders.

A Chain Reaction and Devastating Losses

Jenner, 21, from Crowborough, East Sussex, sustained a catastrophic head injury after the crash, despite trackside treatment and further resuscitation efforts at the medical center. Richardson, 29, from Wainuiomata, New Zealand, suffered severe chest injuries and tragically passed away before reaching the hospital.

Another rider, Tom Tunstall, 47, was hospitalized with significant back and abdominal injuries, while five others received minor injuries at the track. Fortunately, three riders were unharmed.

Tributes and Emotional Reactions from Fellow Riders

Following the tragic accident, tributes poured in from fellow riders in the British Superbike series. Morgan McLaren-Wood, who suffered minor injuries, expressed his sorrow, stating, “Rest in peace, Shane and Owen. My heart goes out to their families during this heartbreaking time.”

Rory Skinner called the loss “too cruel,” while Jaimie van Sikkelerus referred to the incident as a “black day for motorsport.” Cameron Dawson, a close friend of Jenner, shared an emotional tribute, referring to him as a brother and recalling their shared journey in the sport.

The Investigation and the Sport’s Risks

The tragic incident occurred when a rider lost control at Old Hall corner, causing a pile-up of 11 riders. Motorsport Vision Racing (MSVR) confirmed the race was immediately stopped, and the event was later canceled. The full investigation is underway, led by the Motorcycle Circuit Racing Control Board, in conjunction with the Cheshire Constabulary and the coroner.

Motorcycling New Zealand’s president, Michael McLeod, also expressed his grief over Richardson’s death, describing him as a “fantastic guy” and a “real nice bloke.”

The crash has been a reminder of the inherent risks of motorcycle racing, though the sport’s safety measures are credited with limiting fatalities. Despite this, the loss of Jenner and Richardson has left the motorsport community devastated.

Cheshire police have confirmed they are investigating the incident, and there is no indication that upcoming British Superbikes events will be affected. Tickets for the next race at Donnington Park, scheduled for May 16-18, remain on sale.
