Ovechkin Moves Closer to Gretzky’s Record

Alex Ovechkin scored his 886th career goal into an empty net to seal a 4-2 victory for the Washington Capitals over the Seattle Kraken. This goal brings him just nine shy of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goal record.

A Historic Milestone

Ovechkin’s goal, which came with 1:31 left in the game, was his 33rd of the season and marked his 1,600th career point. The crowd erupted in cheers as they chanted “Ovi! Ovi!” in celebration.

Leading the Empty-Net Charge

According to ESPN Research, this was Ovechkin’s eighth empty-net goal of the season, pushing him ahead of Mikko Rantanen and Brandon Hagel for the NHL lead. Ovechkin also extended his own NHL record for the most career empty-net goals, now at 65.

Key Moments in the Game

Connor McMichael scored the go-ahead goal earlier in the game, shortly after a line brawl nearly broke out. All ten skaters on the ice were sent to the penalty box, and Washington’s Brandon Duhaime received a 10-minute misconduct.

Capitals Continue Their Strong Form

In addition to Ovechkin’s milestone, Martin Fehervary and Dylan Strome also found the back of the net, while Charlie Lindgren made 30 saves for the Capitals. With this victory, Washington extended their lead atop the Eastern Conference and the Metropolitan Division.

Kraken Fall Short

Shane Wright and Jordan Eberle scored for the Kraken, and Joey Daccord stopped 20 of 23 shots, but Seattle was unable to secure back-to-back wins over the weekend.

What’s Next for Ovechkin?

The Capitals will head to California for a three-game road trip, starting Tuesday night at Anaheim. Ovechkin is set to break more records, with his next goal in March potentially surpassing Gretzky for the most goals in any calendar month.
