Liverpool stunned by Wolves late winner as Champions League hopes take another hit

Another stoppage time setback deepens Liverpool frustration

Liverpool suffered another painful defeat after Wolves secured a dramatic 2-1 victory with a deflected goal in the 94th minute at Molineux. Arne Slot’s side once again dropped crucial points in stoppage time, continuing a worrying pattern that could damage their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

For Slot, the result felt painfully familiar. Liverpool have now become the first team in Premier League history to lose five matches in a single season due to goals scored after the 90th minute. Including late equalisers conceded earlier in the campaign, the Reds have allowed nine points to slip away in injury time alone.

The Liverpool coach admitted the recurring problem is difficult to ignore. Similar late blows from Bournemouth and Manchester City earlier in the season had already raised concerns about the team’s ability to manage games in the closing moments.

Dominance without control and costly mistakes

Statistically, Liverpool controlled much of the match. They had more possession, created more attempts, and largely limited Wolves’ chances. Yet the scoreline told a different story, leaving Slot frustrated that his team conceded twice despite allowing very few opportunities.

The visitors also struggled early in the match, with a sluggish start allowing Wolves to stay organized and compact. Mohamed Salah eventually ended his long Premier League scoring drought with a clever finish using the outside of his left foot, scoring his 253rd goal for Liverpool and his first league goal since November.

However, that moment was not enough to secure points. Liverpool struck the woodwork twice during the match, including a low effort from Rio Ngumoha that Jose Sa pushed onto the post and another chance that bounced off the crossbar after a set piece.

Late drama seals Wolves victory

Wolves initially focused on defending with discipline but gradually became more ambitious as the match progressed. Manager Rob Edwards made key substitutions that shifted the momentum late in the game.

One substitute helped create the equaliser as Rodrigo Gomes scored shortly after coming on. The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when Andre fired a shot that deflected off Joe Gomez, looping beyond Alisson and into the net.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk admitted the defeat was largely self inflicted. He described the team’s performance as slow and predictable, with poor decision making and sloppy possession.

For Wolves, the win was another morale boost after also defeating Aston Villa earlier in the week. Meanwhile, Liverpool must confront the reality that dropped points against lower ranked teams such as Wolves, Nottingham Forest, Burnley, and Leeds may ultimately cost them a place in next season’s Champions League.
