Cornelius decides heated friendly in Swansea
Canada spoiled Wales’ return to Swansea as Derek Cornelius scored a thunderous 25-yard free-kick in the 41st minute to hand the visitors a 1-0 win. It was only Craig Bellamy’s second defeat in 12 games as manager, and his first on home soil.
The contest was anything but friendly, with referee Robert Jones showing eight yellow cards in a feisty encounter that saw both sides test the limits of discipline. Canada also hit the woodwork twice and wasted other chances, while Wales saw late efforts cleared off the line.
Bellamy fumes at Marsch celebrations
After the match, Bellamy expressed frustration at Canada boss Jesse Marsch for celebrating before the final whistle:
“I see him celebrating at the end. I’m thinking, I hope I see you at the World Cup. I hope I see you again,” said the Wales coach.
Despite fielding a side with eight changes from their win in Kazakhstan, Bellamy refused to make excuses, highlighting debuts for Cardiff’s Ronan Kpakio and Leeds’ Charlie Crew.
Tough test from World Cup co-hosts
Jesse Marsch’s team, led by Juventus striker Jonathan David, offered exactly the stern challenge Bellamy sought from a 2026 World Cup co-host. Canada’s attacking threat caused Wales repeated problems, with Ismael Kone and Luc De Fougerolles both striking the frame of the goal before Cornelius’ decisive moment.
What’s next for Wales
Wales now turn their attention back to World Cup qualifying, where Kieffer Moore’s recent winner in Kazakhstan kept alive hopes of topping the group. Bellamy will look to blend experience with emerging talent after testing his wider squad in Swansea.
