Tragic incident during Chichester City match
Former Arsenal academy striker Billy Vigar died on Thursday morning aged 21 after suffering a significant brain injury. Playing for Chichester City against Wingate & Finchley last Saturday, Vigar collided with a concrete wall while trying to keep the ball in play. He was placed in an induced coma and underwent surgery but could not be saved.
Club statement and family grief
Chichester City confirmed the news and said Vigar’s family are “devastated that this has happened whilst he was playing the sport he loved.” The club offered condolences and support to his loved ones and teammates.
Safety concerns raised by the PFA
The Professional Footballers’ Association has previously urged a review of safety rules around pitchside advertising boards after a similar injury to former Bath City striker Alex Fletcher. Vigar’s death is expected to intensify calls for improved ground safety.
