Tuchel Commits to England Through Euro 2028

Contract Extension Locks in Future Beyond World Cup

Thomas Tuchel has agreed a contract extension that will keep him as England head coach until the end of the European Championships in 2028. The Football Association confirmed the deal on Thursday, extending his tenure well beyond the upcoming 2026 World Cup, where his original contract was due to expire.

The German coach expressed his delight at continuing in the role. He highlighted how much he has enjoyed working with the players, staff and the support received from the FA and fans. Tuchel described leading England at a home Euros in 2028 as an incredible opportunity and promised maximum effort to make the nation proud at the World Cup first.

The FA emphasised that the extension brings clarity and allows full concentration on the World Cup campaign without distractions from speculation about his future. This timing is notable given links to vacancies such as Manchester United, where Tuchel had been strongly connected.

Tuchel’s core backroom staff, including Anthony Barry, Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne, have also extended their commitments through to Euro 2028.

FA Chief Explains Decision and Performance Clauses

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham welcomed the agreement, stating Tuchel was the ideal choice when appointed in October 2024 and has only enhanced his standing through a flawless qualifying campaign. Bullingham pointed to Tuchel’s big-game experience, knowledge and passion as key factors giving England the best possible chance of success this summer and at the home Euros in two years.

He described the current setup as a strong mix of English coaching and international expertise. By securing the team early, the FA has removed the risk of contract talks overshadowing the World Cup preparations.

Bullingham confirmed the new deal includes performance conditions but declined to detail them or confirm any break clause after the World Cup. He dismissed criticism of renewing before the tournament, arguing it would be unrealistic to let the contract run down given Tuchel’s value and the interest from other clubs. He stressed the FA’s firm belief in Tuchel leading into 2028 regardless of World Cup outcomes.

Focus Turns to World Cup and Long-Term Ambition

Tuchel, who will attend the Nations League draw in Brussels, took over from Gareth Southgate and quickly set his sights on adding a second star to the England shirt by winning the 2026 World Cup in North America. His side breezed through qualification, winning all eight matches against Albania, Serbia, Latvia and Andorra.

Preparation includes friendlies against New Zealand on June 6 and Costa Rica on June 10 in a Florida camp, ahead of the tournament opener against Croatia on June 17, followed by games versus Ghana and Panama.

Sky Sports News chief correspondent Kaveh Solhekol noted the FA’s strategic move to avoid media speculation during the World Cup. With Tuchel in high demand and several top jobs potentially opening, securing him now prevents distractions. However, Solhekol cautioned it carries risks, recalling the FA’s experience with Fabio Capello before the 2014 World Cup, where a pre-tournament extension led to complications after a poor showing. The FA views the current decision as a calculated and worthwhile risk given Tuchel’s strong impact so far.
