Tuchel expects Wembley to back Ben White despite questions over his England return

Thomas Tuchel believes Ben White will receive support from the England crowd when the defender returns to the national team setup, even though his comeback has reopened debate around the way he left the squad during the 2022 World Cup.

White is back in the picture for the first time since walking away from the tournament in Qatar for personal reasons. Since then, he stayed out of the international fold and did not feature again during Gareth Southgate’s spell in charge, which made his recall a talking point as soon as Tuchel brought him back in.

Tuchel says White deserves another chance

The England manager made it clear that he has no issue with White based on what he has seen since taking charge. In his view, the Arsenal defender has behaved properly and shown the right attitude, which is why he feels the player should be given a fresh opportunity.

At the same time, Tuchel did not ignore the fact that unfinished business remains. He acknowledged that White likely needs to speak with the teammates who were in the squad at the last World Cup, so that everything can be addressed properly inside the group.

The crowd reaction is a point of discussion

Some supporters have not been pleased by White’s return, especially because the defender has never publicly explained the reasons behind his departure from the World Cup camp or his long absence afterward.

Even so, Tuchel does not expect Wembley to turn on him. He feels the atmosphere should stay positive and believes the fans will get behind all the players, including those who are only now trying to earn or rebuild their place in the squad.

Competition is intense in Tuchel’s final camp before the World Cup

Tuchel has named a large 35 man group as he works toward his final decisions for the summer tournament. That has created a highly competitive environment, with players fully aware that places are still on the line.

England will use one set of options against Uruguay and then make major changes for the next match against Japan. That means this camp is not only about preparation, but also about proving who deserves to travel.

Palmer also has a lot to prove

Among the players under pressure is Cole Palmer, who is pushing to secure a place in the final World Cup squad. Tuchel is expected to give him a chance against Uruguay, but made it clear that no one will be handed a role automatically.

The England boss said Palmer has had a difficult season, partly because of injury issues, and also has not built enough momentum with the national team lately. Still, he has seen positive signs in training and believes the Chelsea attacker is getting back to full confidence.

Tuchel wants performances, not assumptions

The England coach’s message has been simple throughout the camp. Every player has to earn his place. Reputation alone will not be enough, especially in positions where competition is strong.

That applies to White as much as to Palmer and the rest of the squad. For Tuchel, the goal is to leave this camp with clarity, and for the players, the task is to make sure they are impossible to ignore.
