Targett’s Double Fires Middlesbrough Back to Winning Form Against Birmingham

Matt Targett scored twice in the first half to guide Middlesbrough to a convincing 3-1 victory over Birmingham City. The result helped the visitors bounce back strongly and widen their advantage in the race for Premier League promotion.

Middlesbrough arrived at St Andrew’s following a three-match winless streak but quickly took control of the contest. With Millwall’s recent win having reduced the gap to just one point before kickoff, Kim Hellberg’s team responded emphatically to reclaim a four-point cushion in second place. For Birmingham, the defeat marked only their second home league loss since May 2024, pushing their playoff aspirations further out of reach as they sit eight points adrift of the top six.

Early Dominance and Targett’s Clinical Finishing

The game started with a scare for the away side when Tommy Doyle nearly punished an early error, but goalkeeper Sol Brynn made a crucial save. Middlesbrough soon settled and struck first in the 13th minute. Aidan Morris delivered a precise diagonal pass, allowing Targett to time his run perfectly, evade the defense, and slot a calm finish past James Beadle. Targett, who made nearly 90 appearances for local rivals Aston Villa, celebrated in front of the home crowd without hesitation.

Momentum swung firmly in Boro’s favor, and they doubled their lead just 13 minutes later. Christoph Klarer lost possession in a risky area, Hayden Hackney nodded the ball to Targett, and the full-back confidently buried his second goal of the evening to make it 2-0.

Birmingham Fightback and Boro’s Response

The second half began with renewed energy from the hosts. Kai Wagner tested Brynn early, and within three minutes Birmingham pulled one back. Jay Stansfield escaped the offside trap and squared for Marvin Ducksch to score his ninth league goal of the season. The strike briefly unsettled Middlesbrough, and Brynn had to produce a sharp save to prevent Ducksch from leveling the score.

However, the visitors regained composure and restored their two-goal cushion on the hour mark. Luke Ayling whipped in a dangerous cross, and David Strelec directed a header against the post and in for his first goal of 2026, sealing a vital three points.

After the match, Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg praised the impact of his tactical tweak to a back-three system and highlighted Targett’s resilience. He noted the defender had been playing through discomfort yet remained positive and effective throughout. Birmingham boss Chris Davies described the performance as deeply disappointing and acknowledged that achieving a top-six finish would now require something extraordinary from his team.
