Luke Edwards questions focus and intensity after shock exit
Sunderland’s FA Cup run came to an unexpected end after a disappointing fifth-round defeat to League One side Port Vale. Despite the gap between the teams in the football pyramid, the Black Cats failed to match the urgency and commitment shown by their opponents, who reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954.
Speaking after the match, Telegraph journalist Luke Edwards said Sunderland did not look fully ready for the challenge. In his view, the team lacked the focus and sharpness that have usually defined their better performances this season. He pointed out that Sunderland are normally physical, aggressive and relentless when playing well, but none of those qualities were visible often enough in this tie.
Port Vale treated it like a final and Sunderland never matched that level
Edwards also suggested Sunderland tried to play the game at too slow a tempo, which played into Port Vale’s hands. He stressed that this is often how FA Cup shocks happen, with one team approaching the occasion as the biggest match of their season while the other fails to match that intensity.
Port Vale, who have struggled badly in League One and remain deep in trouble near the bottom of the table, played with far more energy and determination. That was especially notable given they were coming off another demanding match just a few days earlier against Bristol City.
For Edwards, the result was not only about Port Vale rising to the occasion, but also about Sunderland failing to bring the level of focus and aggression needed to avoid an upset.
