Mohamed Salah may not have played a single minute in Liverpool’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, but he still became a talking point after the final whistle for a very different reason.
With Liverpool beaten 2-0 and outplayed for long stretches, much of the attention initially focused on Arne Slot’s decision to leave his star forward on the bench. But afterwards, observers highlighted Salah’s reaction, pointing to the professionalism he showed rather than any frustration over his omission.
A difficult night for Liverpool and a surprising role for Salah
Liverpool struggled badly away to PSG in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. The French side controlled large parts of the match and deserved their advantage, while the visitors offered very little going forward.
Against that backdrop, Salah’s status as an unused substitute stood out even more. In a game where Liverpool lacked attacking threat, many expected him to be introduced at some point. Instead, he remained on the bench throughout.
Slot felt the game had become about survival
After the match, Arne Slot explained that Liverpool were no longer in a position to chase the game in a balanced way during the closing stages. In his view, the match had become more about hanging on than mounting a serious comeback.
That was why he chose not to bring Salah on. The manager suggested that asking the Egyptian to spend the final phase of the match defending deep inside his own half would not have played to his strengths and would have taken unnecessary energy out of him ahead of the fixtures still to come.
Salah’s post-match conduct drew praise
What caught attention after the game was not anger or visible sulking, but the opposite. Salah was seen taking part fully in the post-match running and recovery work with the rest of the squad.
That detail was picked up on by former players watching the scene unfold, who used it as an example of the forward’s mentality. The point they made was simple: after being left out on a big European night, a player in Salah’s position could easily have shown frustration. Instead, he remained fully engaged in his routine and his responsibilities.
Professionalism over emotion
The praise aimed at Salah centered on his ability to stay disciplined in a moment that could easily have become emotionally charged. With only a small number of games left in his Liverpool career, and with the team needing inspiration, being left unused would have been a major disappointment.
Yet there was no public show of resentment. Instead, he focused on the next task, which many saw as further proof of his professionalism.
Attention now turns to Liverpool’s response
While Salah’s reaction earned respect, the bigger issue for Liverpool remains the performance itself. The team were second best in Paris and now face a serious challenge if they want to turn the tie around.
For Salah, the expectation is obvious. If Liverpool are to recover, he will almost certainly need to play a central role in that response. His professionalism after the first leg may have been noted, but what matters most now is whether he can help shape the story of the second.
