Manchester United’s season plunged into deeper turmoil after a crushing 3-0 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday. The Red Devils have collected only four points from their first four Premier League matches, marking their worst start to a campaign since 1992-93.
This result has intensified scrutiny on manager Ruben Amorim, who admitted after the loss that he fully understands the anger of the fans and the growing calls for change.
United’s latest setback follows their record-worst Premier League season last year, which was also their worst overall campaign since being relegated in 1974. Since taking over on November 1 last year, Amorim has won just eight of 31 league games, leaving United bottom of a 17-team table that includes only sides who have been in the league throughout his tenure.
Amorim accepts blame but stands firm
Despite having a contract until 2027, Amorim is facing mounting pressure and speculation about his future. Speaking after the derby defeat, he openly acknowledged United’s dismal record and said he accepts full responsibility.
“Guys, I understand that and I accept,” Amorim said. “It is not a record you should have in Manchester United. There are a lot of things — you have no idea what happened during these months — but I accept that. I am not going to change.”
Calls for major changes at Old Trafford
Reports claim Amorim has told the club’s hierarchy that if they want to change Manchester United’s direction, they will need to appoint a new manager. This admission has sparked further uncertainty over his tenure, as discontent continues to grow among supporters.
Meanwhile, criticism has also been directed at several players, with Marcus Rashford among those singled out, and pundits warning Amorim is making major mistakes with his team selections.
