Blunt Response to Micah Richards
Roy Keane told Micah Richards he was “being silly” after the pundit suggested Michael Carrick could be the right choice for the permanent head coach role at Manchester United. The comment came during Sky Sports’ Super Sunday coverage following United’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Carrick remains undefeated in his first two games in temporary charge after Ruben Amorim’s dismissal earlier this month. Keane acknowledged the strong performances but remained unconvinced about the 44-year-old taking the job long-term.
Keane said: “The job? No, you’re being silly now. Yeah, two great performances… anyone can win two games, it’s what he does at the end of the season. Even if they do get into fourth, I still wouldn’t be convinced that he’s the man for the job. Absolutely not. I still think they need a bigger and better manager. But he’s got the opportunity – what a chance it is for him, and do you know what, he’s taking it so fair play to him.”
Carrick Keeps Focus on the Present
Carrick himself was more optimistic after the match telling reporters: “I’m enjoying it. It’s a fantastic position to be in. What happens next I’m not going to be answering it every week. I’m enjoying it and I’ll continue to do what I can.”
United produced a remarkable comeback in north London climbing to fourth in the Premier League table and moving closer to European qualification. Arsenal started strongly with Lisandro Martinez scoring an own goal in the 29th minute while attempting a clearance.
The lead lasted only eight minutes as Bryan Mbeumo intercepted Declan Rice’s back pass rounded David Raya and slotted into an empty net. Patrick Dorgu gave United the advantage early in the second half with a stunning volley from the edge of the box.
Mikel Merino equalised with six minutes remaining but Matheus Cunha sealed the win three minutes later with a beautifully curled shot past Raya.
Upcoming Challenges for Carrick’s Side
United next face Fulham at home in a week’s time. The victory over Arsenal has boosted confidence but Keane insists sustained results over the full season are needed before any long-term appointment is considered.
Carrick’s side have shown fight and quality in recent games but the former captain believes United require a more experienced manager to meet the club’s ambitions moving forward.
