Rosenior emerges as Chelsea’s top coaching option

Sources say Chelsea are leaning toward Strasbourg head coach Liam Rosenior as they search for a replacement for Enzo Maresca. The 41 year old has impressed decision makers inside the club, helped by the fact that Strasbourg and Chelsea sit under the same ownership umbrella through BlueCo, the investment group behind the Chelsea takeover completed in 2022.

Chelsea confirmed Maresca’s departure on Thursday, with sources describing the split as the result of a relationship breakdown between the Italian coach and senior figures at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca exit followed internal friction

People close to the situation suggest Maresca became increasingly frustrated with how the club is run. Sources indicate he clashed with Chelsea’s medical department, believing it was overly cautious and restricted the playing time of certain squad members more than necessary.

There was also tension around the club’s support setup. After matches, the head coach receives technical feedback from a backroom group that includes five sporting directors. Sources say Maresca wanted greater authority over team decisions and a stronger voice in day to day football matters, while Chelsea stayed committed to its existing structure.

Shortlist takes shape as interim plan set

While Rosenior is viewed as the leading option, sources stress the race is not closed and that a small shortlist remains in play. Roberto De Zerbi is not being considered this time, despite being interviewed before Maresca was hired in 2024. Chelsea have also ruled out moves for Como coach Cesc Fabregas and Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner.

Academy chief Calum McFarlane is scheduled to face the media on Friday ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Manchester City. However, sources say he is not a candidate for the permanent role. McFarlane is expected to take charge at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday as discussions continue over a long term appointment.
