Rohl drops out of Rangers head coach search

German coach ends talks as Rangers take their time

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl has told Rangers he no longer wishes to be considered for the head coach role. He is the second candidate to step away in five days after Steven Gerrard declined a return. Club sources indicate that more than one contender is still in the frame as the board continues a careful process.

Muscat remains an option amid scheduling hurdles

Ex Rangers midfielder Kevin Muscat is under consideration. He is currently in charge of Shanghai Port with four fixtures left this month, which could delay any approach until late November. Rangers are balancing availability with the need to make a stable long term appointment.

Rohl’s profile and recent work

Rohl previously coached at RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and with Germany as assistant. He became the youngest manager in the English Football League when he took over Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023. He kept the team up and then guided them to a mid table finish before departing in the summer amid ownership and financial issues.

Context after Martin’s exit

Russell Martin was dismissed after 17 matches with the team eighth in the Premiership following one win in six. The club also lost 9 to 1 on aggregate to Club Brugge in Champions League qualifying and opened the Europa League with two defeats. Next up in the league, Rangers host Dundee United on Saturday.
