Maro Itoje has been appointed as England’s new captain, replacing Jamie George, ahead of their Six Nations opener against Ireland on February 1.
Itoje Replaces George as England Captain
Steve Borthwick, England’s head coach, has made a significant leadership change by naming Maro Itoje the 136th permanent captain of the national team. The 30-year-old second-row forward, who also captains Saracens, takes over from his club teammate Jamie George. George, however, will retain a leadership role as vice-captain alongside Ellis Genge.
Borthwick’s Statement on the Leadership Shift
Head coach Steve Borthwick praised both Itoje and George in his announcement:
- On Maro Itoje:
“With 88 England caps, Maro brings immense experience and a calm, influential leadership style. His ability to inspire and maintain high standards makes him an ideal choice for the captaincy.” - On Jamie George:
“Jamie’s contributions as captain have been invaluable, and he will continue to play a vital role as vice-captain.”
Why Itoje is the Perfect Fit
- Experience: With 88 England caps, Itoje has been a cornerstone of the squad for years.
- Leadership: As Saracens captain, he has shown the ability to inspire and lead by example.
- Rapport: His strong connection with both teammates and coaches adds to his suitability for the role.
Looking Ahead to the Six Nations
Itoje’s leadership will be tested as England kicks off their Six Nations campaign with a challenging away match against Ireland on February 1. With George and Genge as vice-captains, England’s leadership group appears well-prepared for the tournament.
