Why the deal collapsed
Marc Guehi’s £35m transfer to Liverpool was on the verge of completion, with a medical done and contract agreed, but Crystal Palace pulled the plug late on deadline day. Chairman Steve Parish initially accepted the offer but reversed his decision once it became clear that no replacement would arrive.
Glasner’s firm stance
Manager Oliver Glasner insisted Guehi could only leave if a new defender was signed, calling his captain “necessary” for the club’s success. A planned loan for Igor Julio from Brighton fell through, forcing Palace to retain Guehi.
Liverpool left frustrated
Liverpool filed a deal sheet to push the move through but Palace blocked it after 7:30pm. The Reds may revisit Guehi next summer, especially if Ibrahima Konaté departs amid PSG interest.
Guehi’s future
The England defender, with just a year left on his contract, is expected to attract strong interest in January or as a free agent next summer. Barcelona and Real Madrid are also monitoring his situation.
Deadline day context
While Guehi’s move collapsed, Liverpool still completed a British-record £125m signing of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
