Injury Blow in Cameroon’s Opening AFCON Match
Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba was forced off at half-time during Cameroon’s 1-0 victory over Gabon in their Africa Cup of Nations Group F opener on December 24 in Agadir, Morocco.
The 21-year-old Cameroon international started the match in midfield alongside Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo, who provided the assist for Karl Etta Eyong’s early winner. However, Baleba required treatment in first-half stoppage time for what appeared to be a muscle issue and was replaced by Jean Onana at the interval.
Cameroon held on for the win despite the setback, but concerns immediately arose over Baleba’s fitness. No official update on the severity has been released as of Christmas Day, with fans and clubs awaiting further news.
Impact on Manchester United’s Transfer Plans
Manchester United have long admired Baleba, with concrete interest dating back to the summer when Brighton reportedly demanded over £100m, pricing the Reds out of a move. The player was said to be keen on joining Old Trafford, but no deal materialised.
Recent reports suggested United could revisit the pursuit in January 2026, potentially at a reduced fee around £75m-£85m, as Ruben Amorim seeks midfield reinforcements. However, this latest injury concern could complicate or delay any potential transfer.
A prolonged absence would likely rule out a mid-season switch, forcing United to explore alternatives or wait until summer. Baleba has struggled with fitness this season, completing 90 minutes only twice for Brighton since early November, following a knee issue over the summer.
Baleba’s Ambitions and Brighton’s Stance
Ahead of the tournament, Baleba expressed his determination to shine for Cameroon: “I want to win the AFCON and World Cup with my country. It’s a pleasure to play for my country.”
Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler had previously urged the midfielder to focus amid transfer speculation, stating in October that Baleba would remain a Seagulls player for the season.
As Cameroon prepare for their next group match against holders Ivory Coast on December 28, all eyes will be on whether Baleba recovers in time to feature further in the tournament.
