Man City Draw 3-3 with Feyenoord: Defensive Woes Continue

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were left frustrated after they squandered a 3-0 lead against Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League, ending the match in a 3-3 draw. The team, who had been cruising with a comfortable advantage, saw their defense crumble in the second half, leaving them with more questions ahead of their crucial Premier League clash against Liverpool.

Defensive Struggles and Mental Issues

Guardiola admitted that his side was “fragile” and “weak,” as they failed to maintain their commanding lead. The team’s defense, which had been a solid pillar of their previous successes, now appeared vulnerable. The 3-0 scoreline, established in the 53rd minute by Erling Haaland, turned into a mere draw after the Dutch side took advantage of defensive mistakes.

Former England captain Alan Shearer commented that City looked “frail” and criticized their decision-making, especially after leading 3-2 in the final stages of the match. Guardiola, visibly frustrated, even joked about injuring himself due to the emotional toll of the match.

The Rise of Defensive Frailties

City have now conceded two or more goals in six consecutive matches for the first time since 1963. Guardiola attributed the poor performance to mental instability, acknowledging that once they conceded the first goal to Feyenoord, the team struggled to regain control. This defensive collapse is alarming, especially given City’s reliance on a strong defensive foundation under Guardiola.

Gvardiol’s Mistakes and a Lack of Leadership

Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol, who joined City for £77 million, found himself at fault for both of Feyenoord’s goals. The first came after a misplaced backpass allowed Feyenoord’s Anis Hadj Moussa to score. Gvardiol’s second mistake led to a dramatic late equalizer from Santiago Gimenez.

Former Manchester City player Gael Clichy noted that City lacked a “vocal leader” in defense, and this was evident as the team continued to make individual mistakes. Guardiola, however, defended Gvardiol, stating he would not single him out for blame despite the costly errors.

What’s Next for Manchester City?

With City sitting in 15th place in their Champions League group, they now face a tough task of securing qualification to the knockout rounds. Guardiola is already focused on their upcoming matches against Juventus and PSG, as the team desperately needs to rediscover their winning form before facing Liverpool in the Premier League.
