Newcastle United’s manager, Eddie Howe, has admitted that the future of striker Alexander Isak may be beyond his control amid ongoing links to Liverpool. The 25-year-old forward has expressed his desire to explore other options during this transfer window, despite having three years left on his contract with the Magpies.
Liverpool reportedly made an informal approach for Isak before opting to sign Hugo Ekitike for £79 million, but they remain strong admirers of the Swedish striker. Howe spoke about the situation on Tuesday in Seoul, South Korea, stating, “He is still our player. He’s contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him. My wish is that he stays, but that’s not in my full control.”
No Formal Offer for Isak Yet
Howe clarified that Newcastle has not received a formal offer for Isak from any club. However, Isak’s decision to miss Newcastle’s pre-season tour, including the 4-0 defeat to Celtic, indicated his desire for a change. Howe mentioned that Isak was affected by the transfer speculation and was sent home due to a minor thigh injury, which also prevented him from joining the team on their tour to East Asia.
Isak’s frustration likely stems from the missed opportunity when Liverpool initially showed interest. His replacement at Newcastle, Ekitike, eventually moved to Liverpool, which could have closed another door for Isak’s ambitions.
Isak’s Frustration and Future Ambitions
Isak has made a significant impact at Newcastle, scoring 62 goals and helping the club win the Carabao Cup last season. However, he has expressed frustration that his growth as a player may not be fully matched by the club’s ability to compete at the highest level, particularly in the Premier League.
Isak’s ambition to win trophies and earn a higher wage, potentially £250,000 to £300,000 per week, is a driving factor behind his desire to explore options.
