Harry Maguire extends Manchester United stay after career revival at Old Trafford

Harry Maguire has committed his future to Manchester United by signing a new one year contract, with the club also holding the option to extend it by another 12 months.

The new agreement comes at an important moment for the experienced defender, whose previous deal had been due to expire at the end of the current season. Instead of heading toward an uncertain summer, Maguire now has the chance to continue his story at Old Trafford and build on what has become one of the strongest comeback periods of his career.

A new deal after a major turnaround

At 33, Maguire has managed to rebuild his standing both at club level and on the international stage. He recently returned to the England setup and featured in both March matches, which has boosted his chances of forcing his way into Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup plans.

That recall came after a strong run of performances for United. Since Michael Carrick took charge in January, Maguire has started every game and become a key figure in the team’s improvement. United have lost just once in that spell and have climbed into the top three of the Premier League.

Maguire says staying at United remains a huge honour

After signing the extension, Maguire spoke with pride about continuing at the club. He described representing Manchester United as a great honour for both himself and his family, and said he is excited to extend his time with the team into at least an eighth season.

He also pointed to the ambition within the squad and around the club, making it clear that he believes there are still important moments ahead for this group. His message suggested not just relief at staying, but real belief that more success can still be achieved.

A long journey since his record move

Maguire joined Manchester United from Leicester in August 2019 for £80 million, a fee that still stands as a world record for a defender. Since arriving, he has experienced almost every extreme possible at a major club.

There were early highs, including becoming captain and helping United compete at the top end of the table. Then came a far more difficult stretch, with criticism, the loss of the armband and growing doubts over whether he still had a future at Old Trafford.

Yet instead of leaving quietly, Maguire chose to stay and fight for his place. That decision now looks increasingly important, because his recent form has changed the mood around him completely.

United value his leadership and experience

Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Maguire’s mentality, professionalism and resilience, stressing that his experience remains valuable for a young squad that still wants to compete for major honours.

That is likely a major reason behind the new contract. Maguire is no longer just being judged as a big money signing from the past. He is being seen again as a senior figure who can help guide the current group through an important phase.

Another contract could soon follow at Old Trafford

Maguire may not be the only United player nearing a fresh agreement. Kobbie Mainoo is also reported to be close to signing a new long term deal, one that would better reflect his growth and current role in the first team.

Taken together, these moves suggest United are trying to balance continuity and progression, keeping experienced players who still matter while rewarding the emergence of younger talent.

A fresh chapter, not an ending

For Maguire, this new contract feels like more than just an extension. It is recognition of how far he has come after a period when his future looked far less secure.

Not long ago, a departure felt entirely possible. Now he enters another chapter at Manchester United with renewed trust, improved form and a realistic chance to play an important role again over the next two seasons.
