Ferguson Justifies Benching Tyler Young in FA Cup

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has defended his decision to leave 18-year-old Tyler Young on the bench during their 2-0 FA Cup defeat against Everton at Goodison Park. The match could have been historic, with Tyler facing his father, Ashley Young, marking a potential first in the FA Cup’s 154-year history.

Missed Opportunity for History

The game was highly anticipated due to the possibility of father and son competing on opposite teams. However, while Ashley Young entered the match in the 73rd minute, Ferguson chose not to bring on Tyler, making his final substitution in the 88th minute when Peterborough was still trailing 1-0.

Ferguson’s Explanation

Ferguson addressed the decision post-match, stating:

“It was very difficult to leave Tyler on the bench, but I’ve got to do what I think is best for the team. At 1-0 down, I had to bring on a forward to try and get something out of the game.”

He added that if the game had been 2-0, he would have given Tyler the opportunity to play but emphasized that his priority was the team, not the occasion.

“One of their players had a pop at me, which was bang out of order. We are not a charity case,” Ferguson remarked.

Tyler Young’s Limited Involvement

Tyler Young, who has made just one substitute appearance for Peterborough this season, was included in the squad for the first time in 14 games. Despite not playing, the significance of the moment wasn’t lost on the Young family.

Ashley Young’s Emotional Tribute

Ashley Young shared his emotions on Instagram, calling the experience “monumental.” He posted:

“Even though we didn’t make history by getting on the pitch together, we made memories of a lifetime, son. I am immensely proud of you.”

The heartfelt post included a message from Tyler, who expressed his excitement at being part of the same match as his father.

Keown’s Perspective

Former Everton defender Martin Keown, providing commentary during the match, noted:

“Father and son there. It didn’t happen. But Ashley will be saying to him, ‘Don’t worry, you’ve got a big future ahead of you.'”
