Sheffield United has reappointed Chris Wilder as manager, just three months after parting ways with the 57-year-old. Wilder has signed a three-year deal and will return to lead the Blades for his third spell in charge. His first match back will be this Saturday’s home game against Charlton in the Championship.
Sacking of Ruben Selles and a Difficult Start to the Season
Wilder was replaced by Ruben Selles in June following the team’s loss in the Championship play-off final last season. However, after a tough start to this season, with Sheffield United sitting at the bottom of the Championship after five straight defeats and only one goal scored, the club decided to make a change. Selles was dismissed on Sunday.
Club’s Statement on the Reappointment
A club statement explained: “Following a difficult start to the season, the board felt it necessary to make a change in order to stabilise performances and strengthen our push for promotion. While the adoption of a different style of play was pursued with ambition, results have clearly not met expectations.”
The club expressed confidence in Wilder, saying: “Chris Wilder returns with proven leadership and an unparalleled understanding of Sheffield United. We are confident he is the right person to restore momentum, unite the squad and supporters, and deliver the results necessary to achieve our objectives this season.”
Appreciation for Selles and Future Focus
The statement also thanked Ruben Selles for his hard work and professionalism, but the responsibility for the recent results was acknowledged by the owners. They remain committed to supporting the team in their pursuit of promotion.
