Chiesa Suffers Training Knock as Liverpool Secure Marseille Victory

Unexpected Absence from Squad

Federico Chiesa was a late withdrawal from Liverpool’s squad for the Champions League match against Marseille after picking up an injury during the warm-up. Initially named on the bench the Italian forward was confirmed unavailable early in the game via the television broadcast.

This left Liverpool with only four senior outfield substitutes Cody Gakpo Wataru Endo Andy Robertson and Curtis Jones alongside youngsters Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni plus goalkeepers Giorgi Mamardashvili and Freddie Woodman. Long-term absentees Alexander Isak Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni remained sidelined while Ibrahima Konate missed out due to family reasons with Joe Gomez partnering Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

Slot Explains Chiesa’s Setback

After the 3-0 win that lifted Liverpool to fourth in the Champions League table Arne Slot revealed the injury occurred in training on Tuesday shortly after the media-open portion ended. Chiesa stepped out of the session two or three minutes after journalists left.

The club took him on the trip hoping the issue was minor and treatment in Marseille might allow recovery in time. He attempted the warm-up but was unable to continue so he was removed from the bench. Slot stressed it is not expected to be long-term.

Praise for Gomez and Salah’s Return

Slot highlighted Joe Gomez’s outstanding performance in central defence noting he has played little in the last one-and-a-half years due to injuries and selection choices. Gomez showed he can still form a strong partnership with van Dijk as he did when winning the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp.

On Mohamed Salah’s first start since November’s defeat to PSV after returning from AFCON Slot praised his professionalism. Despite a month away with Egypt Salah was fit enough for 90 minutes knew the teammates and system and came close to scoring though he missed a good chance from Cody Gakpo’s pass.

The victory keeps Liverpool in strong position ahead of their final league-phase game against Qarabag at home next week where they aim to confirm a top-eight finish and avoid playoffs.
