Madueke brace and Arteta praise as Arsenal respond in style

Arsenal came into the game on the back of a 2–0 defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend, but responded with a composed and clinical display in Europe.

Madueke opened the scoring and later added a second, while Martinelli finished off the result with a well-taken third. After the match, Arteta described one of Madueke’s goals as “an unbelievable goal”.

“When you talk about individual quality and magic moments, that is exactly what you mean,” the Arsenal manager said.

The win keeps Arsenal firmly in control at the top of the Champions League table.

It was a busy set of fixtures for English clubs:

  • Manchester City recorded a statement 2–1 victory over 15-time European Cup winners Real Madrid at the Bernabéu.
  • Newcastle United earned a 2–2 draw against German side Bayer Leverkusen.
  • On Tuesday, Italian side Atalanta beat Chelsea 2–1, while Liverpool were beaten 1–0 by Inter Milan.

How the Champions League table looks after six games

Arsenal lead the overall Champions League table with 18 points from six matches. They are three points clear of Bayern Munich, who sit second with 15 points.

Behind them:

  • Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Atalanta each have 13 points.
  • Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Liverpool all sit on 12 points.
  • Borussia Dortmund, with 11 points, complete the current top 10.
