Cummins and Lyon Strengthen Australia for Adelaide Ashes Clash, Khawaja Sidelined

Australia have bolstered their lineup with the returns of captain Pat Cummins and spinner Nathan Lyon for the third Ashes Test against England in Adelaide, starting Wednesday. However, experienced opener Usman Khawaja, approaching his 39th birthday, has been omitted from the playing XI despite declaring full fitness. The hosts, leading 2-0 after convincing victories in Perth and Brisbane, aim to retain the urn soon while demonstrating impressive squad depth.

Cummins, recovering from a back issue that sidelined him since July, resumes leadership duties from Steve Smith, while Lyon comes back after being rested for the pink-ball Test. Pacers Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett make way following their contributions in the series so far.

Khawaja Overlooked Despite Readiness, Path Remains Open

Khawaja missed the second Test due to back spasms suffered in the opener but confirmed he was ready to return. The selectors, however, preferred continuity in the batting order, where newcomers Jake Weatherald and Travis Head have formed solid opening partnerships, posting stands over 70 in both previous matches.

The decision means Khawaja stays on the sidelines, prompting questions about whether he has played his last Test for Australia. Yet Cummins remained optimistic about potential future inclusion, emphasizing weekly team selections and Khawaja’s versatility across the order.

He highlighted how Head’s promotion to open alongside Weatherald has provided strong foundations, allowing middle-order batsmen like Marnus Labuschagne and Smith to capitalize early. Cummins stressed that the current lineup feels balanced and effective, reducing the need for changes lower down.

Squad Depth and Peak Form Boost Confidence

The captain praised the team’s bowling reserves, noting that the series lead was secured without himself or the injured Josh Hazlewood, who is ruled out for the remainder. Stand-ins performed admirably under Smith’s temporary captaincy and coaching guidance.

Cummins described his rehabilitation as aggressive but successful, involving complete rest followed by rapid buildup, leaving him in better condition than anticipated. He expressed satisfaction with the entire squad’s commitment, including those not selected, and believes Australia are hitting peak form with ample resources heading into the final three Tests.

Steve Smith, who missed training due to illness earlier in the week, returned to the nets ahead of the match.
