AIFF Dismisses Igor Stimac Following World Cup Qualification Failure

Following an unsuccessful bid in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has terminated Igor Stimac’s contract as head coach of India’s senior men’s team as of 17 June. Appointed in 2019 and extended in 2023, Stimac’s tenure concluded after India’s defeat to Qatar (1-2) in the crucial second-round match, preventing their progression to the third round. The AIFF announced, “Given the unsatisfactory results, it was unanimously decided that appointing a new head coach would be the optimal step forward for the team.” The federation’s Acting Secretary General, Mr. Satyanarayan, has been tasked with formally notifying Stimac of the termination.
