Natasha Jonas, the 40-year-old IBF welterweight champion, had once planned for retirement after a stellar performance in January against Mikaela Mayer. However, her recent success has led her to revise her plans, continuing her career into 2025.
A Change of Plans
Jonas had initially anticipated that 2024 would be her final year in boxing, but her victory over Mayer in January reignited her passion. She now aims for even greater accomplishments before stepping away from the ring. Jonas will first face WBC champion Ivana Habazin in a world title unification fight in Liverpool, England. If successful, Jonas plans to face another title fight against British rival Lauren Price.
Title Dreams and Rivalries
Despite nearing the end of her career, Jonas remains focused on high-profile matches. She still harbors the desire for a rematch with Katie Taylor, whom she lost to in 2021. She also hopes for a second fight with Mikaela Mayer, calling it “personal.”
Jonas also criticized the push for three-minute rounds in women’s boxing, stating that it wouldn’t be beneficial for her and that the current two-minute rounds are more exciting and dynamic.
Preparing for the Future
With the possibility of two or three more fights left in her career, Jonas is determined to go out on her own terms, aiming for a high note. As she moves forward with her unification fight against Habazin, Jonas is ready to prove that she still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.
